GOP Candidates Take Christmas Off

December 26, 2011 from WOI

The Iowa caucuses are a little more than a week away. But the GOP presidential candidates dialed back the intensity of their TV ads over the weekend. Instead, many ads featured gentler messages ? many of which showcased the candidates' wives.

ABUJA (Reuters) ? At least 25 people were killed in a bomb attack on a church in a satellite town on the outskirts of the Nigerian capital Abuja on Sunday, emergency services said.

"I cannot give an exact figure of casualties now. But we (National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA) came with 25 body bags and we have exhausted them all. So at this point we are talking of 25 bodies in those bags," said Slaku Lugard, a NEMA official.

Clarke to Santa: I have been good, let us beat India!

Melbourne:?

Australia skipper Michael Clarke has reportedly asked a win against India as a Christmas gift from Santa.

In a report published in the Herald Sun, Clarke was appreciated for being 'selfless' this festive season and pray for collective glory rather than for personal ambitions. "All I want for Christmas is to beat India in this first Test match," he was overheard as jokingly telling a Santa Claus in his team hotel.

The 30-year-old batsman is believed to have sat on Santa's lap as he posed for fans in the hotel. "Yes, I've been a good boy," he said and added laughingly that he was not sure about David Warner, the other cricketer who was also present here with him.

Experts and fans may have mostly put money against his side and the year? may have passed with more lows than highs. Clarke however has managed to battle past a back ailment and his Christmas wish does not come as an entire surprise.

Members of the Indian team (photograph above) were also seen getting into the festive spirit on Christmas eve. (Related: Pics - India, Australia cricketers get 'street smart')

Obama, GOP Thank Troops

(Dow Jones) - President Barack Obama and a member of the Republican opposition on Saturday thanked US troops for their service and wished everyone a merry Christmas in their respective radio addresses.

"For many military families, the best gift this year is a simple one -- welcoming a loved one back for the holidays," President Obama said in his weekly radio address to the nation. US troops have returned from Iraq this month, ending a nearly nine-year war.

"So let's take a moment to give thanks for their service; for their families' service; for our veterans' service," the president said. First Lady Michelle Obama, who is spending the holidays in Hawaii with the president, also thanked troops for their service.

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) spoke for the Republicans and said while many people are blessed, "too many will greet this season with heartache."

"Some of our neighbors, family and friends are struggling to make ends meet despite their best efforts, unable to find work in this difficult economy," he said.

Pence said people should thank US troops and work alongside struggling families to ensure they get the support they need during rough economic times.

"Let's also make a point to personally reach out to that neighbor or friend who needs a helping hand, a kind greeting or an invitation -- it might be just the gift someone needed most," he said.

Isn't it time to forgive Bartman?

I had MLB Network on in the background today in the CSN Chicago office and the intro for their series on the MLB's 20 Greatest Games was playing.

I wasn't really paying attention...until I heard Mark Prior's name. Before I could turn around, I started hearing more names like Sammy Sosa and Alex Gonzalez.

Yes, it was a replay of Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS. Ouch.

I don't need to get into the entire game. If you're a Cubs fan and you were alive in '03, you know the events that transpired. Sure, maybe you've repressed them and hoped never to have to re-live those moments again, but you still know what's up.

What I did want to address was Steve Bartman.

Why are there some Cubs fans out there that still blame him?

Take a look at the play again to refresh your memory:

There are numerous fans going for the ball. It's not just Bartman. That dude in the gray jacket left his seat a row or two up and came dangerously close -- we're talking maybe centimeters -- from hitting the ball instead of Bartman.

It's not like he was reaching that far over the field of play. The ball looks like it would have hit off the cement or railing.

And it's not like Alou was some defensive whiz. Who knows if he would have even held on to the ball when he came down with it?

Plus, that's just one play, one out. He didn't make Dusty Baker leave Prior in way, way, way too long. Bartman didn't cause the normally sure-handed Alex Gonzalez to commit an error. He wasn't the cause of the total team implosion.

And keep in mind, even if Bartman's play was the sole reason the Cubs lost Game 6: There was still a Game 7! The Cubs still could have come back and won then, too!

Why is this guy getting all the blame?

Look at that video. Don't you feel sorry for the guy? I watch that video and feel just like I do when watching a three-legged dog try to run. (I'm not comparing Bartman to a three-legged dog, just merely saying the same kind of pity goes out to each.)

Hopefully Theo is true to his word and welcomes Bartman back to Wrigley sometime in the near future.

This season will be the ninth since Bartman's infamous moment. Fans will never forget. But it's time to forgive.

It was not his fault.
