Dying Man's Daily Journal ? You don't have to be alone ? Dying ...
I always encourage all to read all of the comments left by others here on the blog. So often within these comments wisdom far beyond any I could ever hope to provide. Often there we will also read the touching and heart breaking stories of those that?so badly need the loving support I know from personal experience we can all provide here. Such in fact is a comment left several days ago by Ellie. At the time I just did physically not have the time to respond in the way I would like to. Yes, even I have busy days some times. First off, here is Ellie?s comment:
?Hi, Bill.? Thank you, thank you for this wonderful website.? You are a hero to me; I needed to find this page today.
We are almost in an identical situation.
My name is Ellie and a gal your age (small world).? I have had a rare type of autonomic nervous system failure.? I, like you, am dying of congestive heart failure, weekly hypertensive urgency events, inability to retain water (I have a central port where I get saline bi-weekly), continuous heart attacks from variant angina, etc.
May I ask you for some sage advice?
First off, I am blessed with a loving husband who is supportive.
After my parents (great caregivers) both died, many remaining family (in-laws and my relatives) and close friends pulled away as soon as my pcp told me to inform them I?m a goner. (Stupid me.)
My sister has a denial problem and tells people I?m not even sick (how weird is that?).? My in-laws are medical professionals and tell me ?I don?t know what to say to you.?? Wow.
Response are: ?I don?t know how to talk to you? ?you lied: you said you were dying and 18 mos later you are still alive? ?I?ll drop off some food (so I don?t have to talk)? ?I?m spontaneous so if you aren?t up to the visit, then too bad? ?can I help? ? you tell them how they can help and then they DON?T do it!?
Every day I have many things I must do correctly or I will die.? It is that simple.? But I can?t explain this as they WILL NOT LISTEN if I discuss my illness.
So I try to make visits and calls about them. But these grown adults act embarrassed and anxious to get away from me.
What to do?
I?m a good listener, witty in conversation, well read, volunteer online, and do medical research for friends/family. I am friends with the 10 or so people in my state with my illness, thank God. But my friends since childhood are running away.
If I cannot add to others? lives, what is the point of all this suffering?
Any brief thoughts on this, Bill?

Hi Ellie. I thank you for sharing your story with us. When you describe your medical condition, I am amazed at all you are going through. We know?heart failure is not a condition unto itself, that there is an underlying condition that brings it on. i am certainly not a doctor to be able to explain such things but what you are going through is different and many time worse than am I. If I don?t over do it I go through most days in relative comfort. Yes, I get chest pain but my nitro spray quickly takes care of that. Shortness of breath and constantly feeling tired, worn out are my big issues. When it comes to the fluids I tend to retain fluid and require what I am told are massive doses of medication to pass it. Many times I have said I am a lucky man and when I read your story, that fact is really brought to mind. My heart, what there is of it goes out to you.
Now when it comes to dealing with family and friends that is a hard one. This hits right to the core of why I started this blog way back when I did. To try and create a spot where those with a terminal illness and there families can come and receive loving support and comfort. At the same time possibly providing a venue where a greater understanding for both can be reached. People fear death to the point of being nervous to even think of it or talk about it. When it suddenly jumps up and ?hits them in the face? when they are forced to deal with it, they just don?t know how to react. How should they react? I suppose in the best way they can based on their personal thoughts, feelings and fears.It is hard but by even doing their best it well may fall short of what we may hope for or even what they may be hoping for.

Oh Ellie?such a candid and honest, albeit difficult thing you shared here, with us.? I?m honoured that you felt you could.? And I hope you remain and find some support through the folks that grace this little haven that Bill?s dedicated to.? It?s a lonely thing, being diagnosed and being handed the raw truth about our mortality.
I know how difficult it was for me and how difficult it?s been for my sister who?s recently been diagnosed with oral cancer.? People had some very normal reactions?because they don?t know what to say, what to do and how to face the pending loss, they offer lip service?.and some who really want to be present, just can?t seem to make themselves deliver.? It?s their way of dealing.? It?s not fun for them and it?s not fun for us.? We can tell them what we need or would like and they can yes yes us, but sometimes it?s just overpowering, I guess.? Fear does stupid things.? Denial is a weird system of coping?but it works for some.? And mortality is everyone?s companion, even though some want to pretend that doesn?t apply to them.
I try to accept that it?s just where people ARE in their own process and keep moving, embracing those who aren?t there?and I just keep moving. That?s the same thing I share with my sister.? It?s just where they are.? I don?t get to ?move? them any faster than they?re ready to BE moved.? And I pray for them and bless them?.cuz really, I get the privilege of not being in their shoes.? I was there once.? Circumstances moved me from that place.? What I get from where I am today is an enriched piece that I can some day hope they?re able to find.? But I can?t make them be where they?re not.
I know it?s lonely and difficult and a hard place to be.? I?m so glad you?ve been able to continue to connect with people, no matter the medium.? And I?ll hope for you to stay connected with us, here. I say it loudly because I mean it?..NO ONE needs to do this alone.? You shouldn?t have to?and gosh??look at where you landed. Here! By Dukes stage for the A + B 31 cases, C + D 26 cases. 21 cases were well-differentiated, and 36 cases were poorly differentiated. There were 26 cases with lymph nodes metastasis and 31 cases without lymph nodes metastases through conventional lymph nodes check. We used immunohistochemical method to detect the expression of PTTG, bFGF and Endostatin proteins in 57 sections from colorectal cancers, and analyzed the relationship between the protein expression and the clinicopathologic features. Romney's bad day is Santorum's best in GOP race (AP)

Romney shrugged off his poor showing, but his losses Tuesday in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado laid bare his stubborn weakness just when it looked as if his party was beginning to embrace him. The former Pennsylvania senator said in a nationally broadcast interview Wednesday morning he thinks conservative Republicans "are beginning to get" that he represents the party's best chance to oust President Barack Obama.
He also used the opportunity to rip into Romney, mocking his criticism of Santorum's time in Washington in the U.S. Senate and Romney's attempt to be seen as the political outsider in 2012.
Santorum scoffed at Romney's criticism of his defeat for re-election to the Senate, saying, "A lot of folks lose races, but I didn't lose, like Gov. Romney, my principles. I wasn't a well-oiled weather vane."

Of Obama, Santorum said: "He believes he's the smartest guy in the country and he should tell people what to believe and how to live their lives."
Santorum also said, ""Mitt Romney is saying I'm not a conservative. I mean, that's laughable."
In the glow of victory Tuesday night, he told his supporters "we had an opportunity to see what a campaign looks like when one candidate isn't outspent 5- or 10-to-1 by negative ads impugning their integrity and distorting their record. This is a more accurate representation, frankly, of what the fall race will look like," a jubilant Santorum told a cheering crowd in St. Charles, Mo.
But it was far from clear that Santorum, who has a post office box for a campaign headquarters and relies on volunteers to handle scheduling, can quickly turn the momentum into the millions of campaign dollars he would need to overcome Romney. Still, he looked past the nomination fight.
"I don't stand here to be the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney, I stand here to be the conservative alternative to Barack Obama," Santorum said. On health care, cap and trade and the Wall Street bailout, he charged, "Mitt Romney has the same positions as Barack Obama."
In Denver, Romney congratulated his rival. The revived questions about Romney's appeal with conservatives at the party's core were even sharper in light of his aggressive push to court them in recent days. Santorum's shoestring candidacy thrived. And the GOP nomination fight many in the party hoped would resolve itself after Super Tuesday now threatened to rumble past March 6 ? while Obama watches from his presidential perch in the White House, and waits.
"This was a good night for Rick Santorum," Romney told supporters in Denver on Tuesday night. He offered a bit of forced optimism: "We'll keep on campaigning down the road, but I expect to become our nominee with your help."
Romney added, "When this primary season is over, we're going to stand united as a party behind our nominee to defeat Barack Obama."
He wasn't the only loser.
On the first day of multi-state voting, the trio of contests exposed a glaring deficiency for Gingrich.
The former House speaker lacked the resources and organization to compete just as he's trying to project strength heading into the Super Tuesday elections. He made only minimal efforts in the three states that voted and stayed out of sight as the results rolled in. Gingrich is focusing on Ohio, where early voting has begun in the March 6 primary.
Texas congressman Ron Paul, meanwhile, reveled in his second-place win in Minnesota and vowed to keep collecting delegates to take to the GOP's national convention this summer.
To be fair, Tuesday's contests will have little bearing on the race for delegates. Missouri's nonbinding primary in particular was little more than an extensive warm-up routine. The state will hold an official caucus in March.
But even symbolic victories can produce or slow down momentum.
Romney's camp began downplaying the results hours before the voting began. Rich Beeson, his political director, released a memo earlier in the day noting that even Sen. John McCain lost 19 states on the way to capturing the GOP presidential nomination in 2008. And Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt, the director of Romney's congressional endorsements, released a statement as the votes began showing his candidate had lost in Blunt's home state.
"I congratulate my friend Rick Santorum on his win tonight," Blunt said. "But the fact remains that this is a nonbinding primary, meaning Missouri's delegates are still very much up for grabs."
Following Maine's low-profile caucuses, which conclude Saturday, the candidates will have an extended lull. Beeson recently noted that momentum would be vital heading into the 17-day period without an election, something he likened to a grand canyon with no precedent in modern presidential politics.
"If you don't have momentum and resources coming into it, it's going to be hard to have momentum and resources coming out of it," Beeson said.
That was a week before he realized his boss would suddenly see his momentum disappear.
Santorum was interviewed Wednesday morning on CNN, Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends" and MSNBC.

Popular Opinion on Climate Change Traced to Political Elites
Even after decades of research, some scientists, policymakers and members of the U.S. general public still fail to focus on climate change as a problem to address.

It seems the general public just can't make up its mind about the existence of man-made climate change. Rather than steadily increasing or decreasing over the last decade, the U.S. public's concern over our warming planet has jumped up and down, according to Gallup polls. But what exactly is driving this seesawing of opinions on climate change?
The level of public concern about this global issue?is mostly influenced by the mobilization efforts of political leaders and advocacy groups, new research shows.
"Public opinion regarding climate change is likely to remain divided as long as the political elites send out conflicting messages on this issue," lead researcher Robert Brulle, a professor of sociology and environmental science at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said in a statement.
To come to their conclusions, Brulle and his colleagues aggregated data from 74 separate national surveys conducted between January 2002 and December 2010. The surveys asked 84,086 respondents to gauge the level of threat they attributed to climate change (some of the surveys used different words to describe the phenomenon, such as global warming and the greenhouse effect). The researchers used this information to create a "climate change threat index," which assigned a numerical value to the public's concern for each quarter of the year.
Next, they developed a list of measures to evaluate the five factors they believed should account for the changing levels of concern: extreme weather events, public access to accurate scientific information, media coverage, positions of political elites and efforts by advocacy groups.
For example, to examine the influence of advocacy, the researchers counted the number of stories on climate change in environmental and conservative magazines, as well as the number of New York Times mentions of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth," between 2002 and 2010.
The researchers also looked at several additional control variables that could possibly influence public concern about the environment, such as the unemployment rate and the gross domestic product (if the public is highly concerned with these economic issues, they would be less likely to worry about climate change).
After plugging all this information into computer models, they found that access to scientific information has a minimal effect on the public's opinion about climate change, while weather extremes have no noticeable effect whatsoever (which slightly contrasts with a 2011 study). Media coverage seems to exert an important influence, but the researchers conclude that this coverage is inextricably tied to other factors, such as political opinions and the state of the economy.

Santorum wins in 3 states as Romney stalls
WASHINGTON (AP) ? A resurgent Rick Santorum has been declared the winner in three states, raising questions about Mitt Romney's appeal with conservatives at the core of the Republican Party.
Voters in Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado chose Santorum.
Romney placed second in two of the three contests, Missouri and Colorado. But Texas congressman Ron Paul took second place in Minnesota.
Bringing up the rear was Newt Gingrich, the blustery former House speaker who largely skipped Tuesday's contests to focus on Ohio, which votes next month.

Dierks Bentley new album brings country fans "Home" (Reuters)
NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) ? If the single "Home" is the cornerstone of Dierks Bentley's latest album of the same name, then the song "Thinking of You" is the CD's hearth because the fire within it warms both body and soul.
Bentley wrote the song for his 3-year-old daughter, Evie, who sings on the track of the new album that went on sale on Tuesday.
"I'm not someone to put their kid on their album," Bentley, the father of two daughters, told Reuters in an interview. "I got this email on my birthday when I was out on the road and it was Evie singing that song back to me. It just about broke my heart. It was the best and worst birthday present ever.
"It's so real and honest and I just couldn't take it off the track once I heard it. You know in country music there are sad songs about drinking and love gone wrong but there's another whole level of sad when you're missing your daughter. That's a whole range of emotion there I'd never felt before."
The 36-year-old Bentley's passion shows through whether he is singing about his daughter or a relationship ready to leap to the next level, or delivering fun-loving tunes like the new album's first single, "Am I The Only One?"
The singer's ninth album follows his highly successful offering "Up on the Ridge" that landed Bentley three Grammy nominations last year, including for Best Country Album. All told, Bentley has had eight No. 1 singles, including "Feel That Fire" and "Sideways."
He said "Up on the Ridge" gave him a chance to stretch out.
"My fans allowed me to experiment and do things a little different, and I still think the record opened the landscape creatively for me," Bentley said.
"With 'Home' I was trying to make a country record that was really representative of me, what I do in country music that is unique. There are certain things I'm known for, like the party songs and the fun songs, and there are songs on this record that are in the same vein, like 'Tip it on Back' and 'Come a Little Closer.' Then there is new ground for me, like 'Thinking of You' and 'When You Gonna Come Around.'"
The lyrics on the title tune can be interpreted in many ways, which is what the Arizona-born singer wanted.
COMING HOME
"Home for me can be coming back to Nashville after I've been on the road. But for soldiers it's seeing that shore for the first time after a year or more in a foreign country," he said.
"People who hear it will interpret it according to what is going on in their life at the moment. Some of the most touching stories I hear are from the soldiers who come up to me and talk about what it's like to be flying back to the States and seeing that piece of land for the first time."
Written with Dan Wilson and Brett Beavers, Bentley gave substantial credit to his co-writers.
As Bentley tells it, the three were working on a lyric when he was called away by his wife asking for help starting her car. When he returned, Wilson and Beavers had stopped working on the other song and come up with a melody for the verse of "Home," intending it to be about America or a place everyone calls home.
"When I'm on tour and hanging out with people I see that there is a lot more in common among us than we might think. So we thought we could write a song about that and that it might be a really interesting take on a patriotic song," Bentley said.
The album's first single, "Am I The Only One," about a guy ready to head out on a Friday night who cannot find any of his buddies to party with him, might be more typical for Bentley. But his duet with Karen Fairchild of the band Little Big Town on "When You Gonna Come Around," broke new ground.
The sexy tune pairs Bentley's rough edge with Fairchild's sultry vocals to convey the message that this is a relationship ready for the next step.
"I love Karen's voice," Bentley said. "Little Big Town is one of the most talented bands out there today. I saw her at a party in Nashville and asked if she'd come sing on this song and she said yes. A couple days later she came in and it turned out perfect."
Bentley is touring in the United States, then embarks on tours of Canada in late February and Australia in March. He resumes his "Country & Cold Cans" tour at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre on April 13.

3)? You?re likely missing opportunities for diversification

Don?t let the jargon confuse you though; the point of alternatives is that they generally move independently of stocks and bonds.? This serves as diversification and may provide protection against a drop in the stock market and the effect that will have on your portfolio. Of course it is possible for the alternatives to lose value as well, but remember; you are attempting to reduce the monetary risk associated with your investment tied to the stock market. You can access alternative investments through mutual funds, which provide liquidity and transparency, but it?s important to make sure that you can access them through your IRA. I also recommend that you seek the guidance of an experienced wealth advisor when incorporating alternative investments into your portfolio so that you get the right investment mix with the right risk level for you.
